The Pixel Fold: Google's first foldable phone

Posted by Tehillah Mwakalombe on 17th May 2023

The Google Pixel Fold is now available for pre-order and it will start shipping next month. The new foldable phone combines the Pixel with a design that unfolds into a compact tablet, bringing out even more ways for you to use your device.

It’s all powered by our Google Tensor G2 chip, which also makes Pixel Fold a really fast and secure device. In this blog we’ll a look at the newest pixel design and features!

Design

When it’s closed, Pixel Fold has the familiar smartphone design that fits your hand and pocket. But when you Flip it open it shows a 7.6-inch screen with a thinner build than any other foldable phone out right now.

It has a custom-built hinge that not only contributes to the thinness, but also doubles as very durable hinge. And the Pixel Fold even has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

Camera

Pixel Fold has many of the camera features we expect from a Pixel device, from Super Res Zoom with 5x optical zoom, Real Tone, Night Sight and Portrait photography along with pro-level modes from Pixel 7 Pro, such as 10-bit HDR video.

With the Camera on the Pixel Fold, you can get the highest quality selfie on a Pixel ever. Use the exterior screen as your viewfinder and the 48-megapixel main camera to get a great selfie.

If you need to be your own camera man or set us the phone to take a group photo of everyone, set up Pixel Fold in tabletop mode across the room and join everyone in the shot. You can even use the new palm gesture to trigger the shutter.

Features

When closed, the outer screen lets you do all the usual tasks you’d expect from a Pixel phone like responding to Messages, browsing Chrome…but, When fully open, the interior screen gives you all the benefits of a tablet. Use the Taskbar to easily switch between your apps or drag a compatible app into split screen mode to multitask with two apps side-by-side. When in splitscreen, you can easily drag and drop files across different apps, like Google Photos to Messages and Slides.

you can also go hands-free with “tabletop mode” so you can sit back and relax while you watch content or capture photos or videos without a tripod. Tabletop mode is especially helpful with watching videos without holding your phone. With YouTube, The top half plays your video and with an upcoming app update, you’ll also get playback controls on the bottom half.

Android 14

The Pixel Fold will work even more amazingly when Android 14 launches later this year. Powered by Tensor G2, Dual Screen interpreter mode simultaneously uses the inner and outer screens to translate live conversations. With this feature, you'll be able to have more natural conversations across languages, without having to huddle around a single screen.

Overall, this device is definitely picking up some hype and with how great Pixel devices have been getting, we can’t wait for this device to be launched and for all the in person reviews to start coming in!
